Making Ground is based in Melbourne, Australia. As a small architecture and design studio we pride ourselves on being people-centric. Good design comes from good relationships — the minute we begin working together, we are not just ‘client’ and ‘architect’, but a collaborative team. Our approachable nature, paired with open and honest communication ensures a personalised experience.

Our process is informed (and unphased) by the nuances of each project, whether it be a difficult site, a complex brief, bushfire risks or planning restrictions — it’s all part of the journey towards a meaningful outcome. We consider light, materials and landscapes in our homes, prioritising calm and well-being as we traverse between inside and out.

We are committed to pushing sustainable practices as far as we can within the capabilities of our humble studio. Sustainable design initiatives are inherent to our methodology, alongside our ideals of delivering authentic, elegant spaces.

As a modern studio, we are empowered by the technology available to us. We utilise digital tools and communication methods to minimise paper waste.

The studio is led by Stella Lien, an architect with a passion for beautiful, yet functional design. She is a problem solver, purveyor of ideas and most of all down-to-earth — she will tell it like it is.

Built on the foundation of good design for good experiences, the studio believes in the transformative power of a well-designed space and its ability to elevate well-being, engage with people and inspire a better way of living.

With extensive experience in the industry from established studios across Melbourne, most recently leading the Architecture arm of a prominent Interior Design studio, Stella’s strong architectural sensibilities and attention to detail has enabled her to deliver high quality designs for a range of budgets.
